Misty-morning_Josephine-Gillespie“I first took up painting as a hobby in 1991. I have always enjoyed art but never had the opportunity to paint until I went to Forgan Arts Centre where I was taught by Jean Martin for 3 years. I gave up painting for a few years to raise my 2 young children when I also worked from home as a dressmaker and private maths tutor. In 2006 I attended a 1 year Fine Art Development Course at the Dundee College under the tuition of Jean Martin and Angus McEwan. I have an engineering background, so drawing has always come naturally to me and I have always enjoyed it. I have been going to a life drawing classes for a few years now. Most of my commissions are portraits, which I do from a combination of sittings and photographs. My paintings are always full of colour – it is a feature that makes my work easily recognisable. I work in a variety of media including watercolour, acrylic, pastel and mixed media. My favourite subjects are figurative, still lifes, trees and coastal village scenes. I teach painting classes from my studio in two sessions, Autumn and Winter and I also teach in St Andrews. I also work as an illustrator for DC Thomson. I participate regularly in the yearly North Fife Open Studios and the Pittenweem Arts Festival.”
