Celebrity Dogs Sign Stage Contracts

In a search for a super-furry superstar, Pitlochry Festival Theatre can now reveal they have found their charismatic canine (or two!) to star as Toto and to join the professional cast, acrobats and aerial artists on stage in the musical spectacular, The Wizard Of Oz, opening next month.

The theatre has been searching for two real-life Totos – to share the schedule - to be Dorothy’s best friend, for the last few weeks. The star-search culminated in doggy auditions at the end of September and finally a recall for the last few on the theatre mainstage - with applause, an earful of ‘Dorothy’s’ serenading, Wicked Witch’s antics and other Emerald City activity -  to make sure Toto will take stardom in his (or her) little-legged stride.

PFT's Associate Director, Gemma Fairley explained:
“Casting dogs has proved much more heartbreaking than casting humans! I’ve gone with the two most reliable, who performed in front of the audience and consistently did what was asked of them. They are Evie (belonging to the Allan family) a little brown and white terrier, and Barney (belonging to the Beeney family) a Tibetan spaniel, Chihuahua cross. Both Barney and Evie are crate-trained, are based in Pitlochry, and known and loved locally.”

Alex Allan, Evie’s ‘theatrical agent’ also told us:
“We’re so excited to be part of this production. The Wizard Of Oz is always a Christmas 'must watch' icon. tv-wise and now, having the chance for our little Evie to be Toto on stage is just brilliant! She is a wee star to us and we’re sure she’ll shine for Pitlochry Festival Theatre and their audiences.”

And Amanda Beeney, with Barney, said:
“It is amazing to be given the opportunity to have Barney perform as Toto. I sent in his photo for fun and didn’t expect it to get far but I am so proud of him doing so well in every audition and can see him go far! He will be the star of Broadway in no time! Barney says thank you for picking him and he looks forward to working with Evie and the cast. He will put his best paw forward and work hard!
