Community Cast march into action for North And South Premiére

After a successful hunt for community cast to join the professionals on stage as part of the Summer Season, over 30 local performers - seasoned and newcomers – are marching onto stage for the much-anticipated premiére of North And South, opening at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Thursday, 29 August, 8pm.

Commissioned by Artistic Director Elizabeth Newman, highly-acclaimed writer and actor, Janys Chambers has written the first-ever stage adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic costume drama in a tale of pride and prejudice amongst the cotton mills. The community cast appear throughout the production: as wedding guests in Harley Street, bucolic farm labourers in the rural south, mill workers and desperate union members invading the stage in the industrial north. All of the cast speak in the show, some taking small parts, and it’s no small feat for the Wardrobe department – demonstrating their well-known magical costuming skills to clothe the additional cast in multiple period outfits.

Elizabeth Newman explained: “North And South is a great story about three communities - the people of London, Helstone and Milton. So it felt vitally important for us to have our local people in our production, to express Gaskell’s powerful, politically urgent and moving story this year.

As a theatre for all, we are entirely committed to creating as many opportunities as possible for local people: to participate and take the space on stage, to connect and speak to the people in their own community.

I have been blown away by the talent and passion of all the individuals in our community ensemble. We cannot wait to watch them fill the Pitlochry Festival Theatre auditorium, with their full hearts and great souls, for our wonderful audiences to enjoy.”

Janys has joined Elizabeth in rehearsals combining their vision to bring the Victorian classic to urgent life. She has previously adapted The Railway Children, The Secret Garden, and Jane Eyre for stage, and for television written for Holby City, and over 100 episodes of Emmerdale. Janys has worked across the country on stage from York Theatre Royal to Birmingham Rep and, on TV, acting includes Coronation Street, Brookside, Dalziel And Pascoe and The Royal Today.

Georgia Brockway, one of the members of the Community Cast told us, “It’s been such a great experience – I feel so lucky, and excited to be able to watch the professional creative process, from the inside! I also get to be a bridesmaid in the Wedding scene so that just about topped it off for me. I can’t wait to get on the stage and see this all come together.”

With only 10 performances, make sure you catch this first ever stage production of the beloved Elizabeth Gaskell classic.
