The Monarch Of The Glen Wins Best New Play Award

Our production of The Monarch Of The Glen triumphed in the Best New Play in Scotland category at the Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) ceremony which took place yesterday in Perth.

The award was presented to playwright Peter Arnott, who adapted Compton Mackenzie’s novel. He said: “It was great to bring this classic political satire to daft, Tartan life with the wonderful, team, cast and crew, music and design Pitlochry Festival Theatre put together. The Monarch Of The Glen was a hoot to adapt for the stage.  Hats off to The Theatre in the Hills for investing in refreshing a Scottish classic for our times while respecting its period setting and allowing the contemporary resonances to shine through.”

Kris Bryce, Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s Executive Director, said: "It was an absolute pleasure to work with Peter to explore how Scottish literary fiction might be successfully adapted for the Pitlochry stage. Director Richard Baron did an outstanding job, assembling and guiding a fantastic cast. We are indebted to the creative talents of Ken Harrison, Set and Costume Designer, Matt Eagland, Lighting Designer, and the creative effort and energy of many others who worked tirelessly to ensure the successful staging of this new play. Pitlochry Festival Theatre holds an ambition to support, develop and nurture Scottish talent so it’s thrilling to see these ambitions recognised and applauded by Scotland’s theatre critics. Congratulations to everyone who was involved in the production.”

Pitlochry has announced that it will present a newly revised revival of Rona Munro's The Last Witch as part of their summer repertoire, directed by Richard Baron, with set and costume designs by Ken Harrison.
