Pitlochry Festival Theatre Welcomes Writers with creation of dedicated WritersRoom

...and announces free Tour and Workshop

On Saturday 16 February, Pitlochry Festival Theatre will throw open its doors to writers, as part of their new artistic ambition to engage and deepen the theatre’s connection with writers at all stages of their careers.

New Spaces

The WritersRoom has two specially designed spaces at the Theatre. The Tummel Room has been created to offer writers the opportunity to be inspired by PFT’s natural landscape as it looks onto the river. There is also the Reading Room. This is connected to the Theatre’s rehearsal spaces, which will act as a library for writers, as well as another writing space. These new writing spaces will offer physical support for writers to help germinate and generate stories that PFT’s Artistic Team hopes will find a home in Pitlochry or with one of PFT’s partners like Perth Theatre, Traverse, Luminate, The Tron, Royal Lyceum, Solar Bear, HOME, plus many more. Furthermore throughout the year there will be opportunities to learn from other great playwrights and dramaturgs like David Greig and Timberlake Wertenbaker. All these sessions will be free.

Workshop:

We kick-start this new work initiative with the fantastic chance for writers to attend a free WritersRoom workshop with award winning playwright Nicola McCartney on 16 February, 2pm. Nicola’s play Heritage will also feature in PFT’s 2019 Season. The session is titled Make it or Break it: An introduction to writing for theatre. To secure your seat at this event, please call PFT’s Box Office on 01796 484626 or email: Boxoffice@pitlochryfestivaltheatre.com

Tour:

Before Nicola’s workshop at 1pm on Saturday 16 February, Elizabeth Newman, PFT’s Artistic Director, will take writers on a tour of the Theatre and the spaces available to them. Any interested writers should register their attendance with PFT’s Box office.

Elizabeth Newman, PFT’s Artistic Director said:
“I invite all writers, who are at any stage in their careers to engage with us. We start the year by opening our doors to writers to come and join us at the Theatre. Send an email to Writers@pitlochryfestivaltheatre.com to book a space in one of our WritersRoom spaces to write your new work. The spaces are available from 10.30am - 5.30pm, Monday-Saturday. You’ll also be able to book online to attend rehearsals at the Theatre and Writers Workshops led by our great playwrights working in Scotland. We want to support writers to tell their stories and create a space where artists can make powerful work that gives a voice to Scotland and its incredible people. Situated in the centre of Scotland, we are determined that PFT become the beating heart of Scottish Theatre - we want to be a place that grows plays as well as plants and people. We will also be announcing bursaries for writers in the spring so please keep in touch.”

Half Price tickets to Winter Words:

In addition, all workshop or tour participants will be entitled to half-price tickets to see Liz Lochhead and all daytime events with the exception of literary lunch events, throughout the Winter Words Festival which runs 14 to 17 February at Pitlochry.
