We’re really delighted to have partnered with Solar Bear and the brilliant writer, Andrew Pettigrew to bring you two monologues as part of #PFTLightHopeJoy, performed by a member of our 2020/2021 ensemble, Matthew James Hinchliffe.

Solar Bear is a Glasgow theatre company working with deaf and hearing actors, theatre-makers, artists and young people to create exciting, accessible shows, to spark ideas and shape the content that embraces visual storytelling, in BSL and English.

Because Solar Bear does things differently, their work is distinctive and surprising.

Inclusion and collaboration are at the heart of their mission, reaching out to those often excluded from the arts. Working more inclusively and collaboratively, they think in radically different ways. It shapes who they work with. It inspires them to play with new ways of storytelling. It influences the stories they tell, and where and how they tell them.

Solar Bear played a crucial role to establish the BA Performance in BSL and English at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) – the first degree course in the UK for deaf actors.

They have also set up Deaf Theatre Clubs and Deaf Awareness Training with major theatres across Scotland and produce and tour high-quality, ambitious and critically-acclaimed work, showcasing deaf and hearing professional performers, including 2018’s touring production of Shaun Tan’s The Arrival.
