Robert Burns and Jean Armour – A Love Story

Scotland’s national bard composed many beautiful, romantic poems and songs in his time. His wife, Jean Armour, is immortalised in both Bonnie Jean and The Belles of Mauchline, in which where he refers to Armour’s the jewel for me o’ them a’. And whilst much is known of Burns, little is documented about Jean.

Catherine Czerkawska’s novel The Jewel is her tale. We hear of an extraordinary marriage, passionate and tempestuous, enduring against all odds, and its rocky course revealing Jean’s indomitable strength and character. Set against a background simmering with political intrigue and turmoil, from the first advances of the mercurial ploughman-poet, whose roving eye and delusions of grandeur were already notorious, to Robert’s early death, we share the compelling tale of how she lived with, and frequently without, Scotland’s most famous son.
