The Sound of Music - von Trapp Family Children Auditions

The Sound of Music Children Call-Out

We are holding auditions for the roles of the von Trapp children in a major new production of The Sound of Music.

We are looking for children and young people aged between 6 and 16 years old to audition for the iconic roles of the von Trapp children – Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl. No acting experience is required but a love of singing is a must. All attendees will be asked to sing and dance in a group and read from a script, no preparation is required. We will be casting teams of six young people to appear as the von Trapp family from 15 November to 22 December.

Elizabeth Newman, Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s Artistic Director and director of The Sound of Music said:

“I’m over the moon that we are going to produce The Sound of Music for audiences this year and now, as the director, I am so excited to embark on the journey of finding our very own von Trapp children! The young people undoubtedly carry the spirit of the story and so it is vital we begin our search. We are looking to find local young people aged between 6 and 16 years old who’d like to take on the challenge of playing the iconic characters Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and dear Gretl. I have no doubt these children will enchant audiences as we bring this timeless and indeed relevant story of love, courage, and music to the Pitlochry stage.”

Inspired by the book The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp, The Sound of Music is set in Austria, 1938, and tells the story of the irrepressible Maria as she begins to doubt her vocation, leaving her convent to become governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp, a widower and retired naval officer. She soon turns the Captain’s orderly life upside down and instils a love of music in his, as well as in each of his children’s hearts. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a difficult decision that will change their lives forever.

Featuring a treasure trove of cherished songs, including Climb Ev’ry MountainThe Sound of MusicMy Favourite ThingsDo-Re-Mi, and Sixteen Going on SeventeenThe Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars in the much-loved 1965 film version featuring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

Rehearsals will take place from 14 October to 14 November, mostly in the evenings and weekends. The young companies will alternate the performances from 15 November to 22 December. There will also be a pre-rehearsal/workshop week in the week commencing 15 July.
